Start with a well blended piece of a mixture of fondant and gumpaste. I use 75% fondant & 25% gumpaste
Roll out thinly.
Measure height of cake, and add one inch to cover a portion of the top of the cake.
Trim the fondant/gumpaste the height of the cake, plus the additional inch. The length of the piece is whatever you feel most comfortable working with. The longer the piece, the more opportunity for cracking/damage.
Create a rounded edge by folding up the bottom. This will create a finished look.
Now start to accordion fold the fondant/gumpaste, being very careful not to damage it. Use the pads of your fingers, and handle it like a baby!
{I do not recommend having long nails, or nail polish for that matter! I had a weekend off
}
Finished accordion fold.
Now place on the side of the cake. At this point, you can manipulate the fabric to make it look more free-form and natural. Be sure to leave a rounded edge (vertically) on either side, to make for a seamless look when you attach the next piece.
