We started with two 10″, one 9″ and one 8″ rounds. This cake only needed to serve 40 people so making it larger would be good if the serving count accommodated that.
We stacked and filled the first two layers (doweled them for support) and then stacked and filled the second two layers (put a center dowel through all four tiers for stability).
Then we carved the cake to make the dog body shape and gave it a crumb coat.
Then we made his head from rice krispie treats and covered the entire head with modeling chocolate. For the wrinkles we added modeling chocolate ropes and used tools to make indentions. See below for the body and head beside it (sorry if it looks a bit gory).
Now it’s time for the fondant. We covered both the head and face seperately, since we were putting a collar around his neck. We doweled the top two layers of cake to support the weight of the head. We attached the head with royal icing. We made sure to get the fondant into all the crevices.
We added fondant ears that were stuck on with toothpicks and royal icing. We made the ears thick at the base (to hold the toothpicks) and thin at the tips. The tail was made of fondant and applied with royal icing.
Then we airbrushed Dino to replicate his actual shading. We added a black fondant nose, black fondant nails and and the black fondant collar. Lastly we added brown fondant eyes (coated with piping gel to give them a glossy look), fondant teeth and a pink fondant tougue. We love how Dino turned out. We hope you like him too.
